Born in Miami in 1981, Armando Christian Pérez transformed himself into Pitbull as a teenager, performing in clubs and refining his style, which was influenced largely by reggaeton and crunk. An introduction to Atlanta’s crunk king Lil Jon led to his being featured on a mixtape by the excitable hip-hop star, which then led to Lil Jon coproducing Pitbull’s 2004 breakthrough single, the raucous “Culo.” Pitbull became a huge presence in Latin pop and hip-hop during the ‘00s, collaborating with the Ying Yang Twins, DJ Khaled and Fat Joe, among others.
