Sherman Symphony Orchestra Late Winter Concert
February 26, 2022 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
$30Sherman Symphony Orchestra’s Late Winter Concert
The Late Winter Concert will be held on February 26, 2022, at 7:30 PM in Kidd-Key Auditorium. We’ll have more great orchestral works, and there’ll be surprises and delights among the wonderful standard pieces. Our musicians won’t let you down.
Two American composers, two symphonies, two underrated works that will make you wonder why they aren’t played more often. Both works are their composers’ second symphony (can you see a theme here?) and both are jazz-influenced and thoroughly modern. William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 2 (1937) is full of lovely melodies and a connection to this composer’s understanding of what it means to be Black and American. The sounds of Harlem and night clubs and jazz mix with a sense of the land and faith and family. Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2 (1930) is theatric and cinematic (later movie composers “borrowed” from Hanson shamelessly) and paints an exciting symphonic picture of American confidence and strength. Don’t miss these special pieces!
